Bagger Twin Cam ‘99-‘06

The Tensioner Question

The '99-'06 cam chest uses a mechanical spring tensioner running against the cam chain. It is a wear item, and when the shoe wears through, the debris goes into the oil system. It is the single most common reason an early Twin Cam gets opened up.

That is why this page carries so many conversion kits. Feuling's OE+, HP+ and Race Series conversions replace the spring tensioner with the hydraulic system Harley moved to in '07. Because the two eras' cams are not interchangeable, a conversion also needs conversion camshafts - the kits are sold that way for a reason, and mixing a late cam into an early chest does not work.

Why This Collection Is Split By Motor

Bolt-on parts go by platform. Engine parts go by cam chest. Two Harleys can wear the same badge, the same year, and still take different cams, plates, tensioners and oil pumps because the motor inside them changed. That is why the store keeps a separate page for each engine generation instead of listing everything under one platform.

Displacement, cam chest generation and whether the motor has been apart before all decide what you need. The fitment list on each product page carries the manufacturer's exact year and model coverage - read it, and if you are building rather than repairing, work out the whole combination before buying the first piece. Performance claims belong to the manufacturer; what any part is worth depends on the rest of your build.
