Sportster Fitment

Sportster covers '57-'22 - XL883, XL1200, Iron, Forty-Eight, Roadster and Nightster. The air-cooled XL is cable throttle. The liquid-cooled RH Sportster is a different motorcycle and does not share these parts - see RH Sportster.

Years that change what fits:

• 2004 - the Sportster moved to a rubber-mounted frame, which changes a great deal of chassis hardware.
• 2007 - fuel injection replaced the carburetor across the range.

Vented Versus Non-Vented

Gas caps are vented or non-vented and they are not interchangeable. A non-vented cap on a tank that needs venting will starve the motor as the tank draws down - it feels like a fuel pump problem and it is not. An oil cooler is worth real consideration on an air-cooled motor that sits in traffic, and an oil pressure gauge is the cheapest early warning you can fit.
