How Filter Care Actually Works

A washable cotton gauze filter does its job through the oil on the gauze, not the gauze alone. That is why the care kits pair a cleaner with an oil: you wash the dirt out, let it dry completely, then re-oil before it goes back in.

Two mistakes are worth avoiding. Do not re-oil a filter that is still damp - it will not distribute properly. And do not over-oil it; excess oil can foul a mass airflow sensor on bikes that have one, and it restricts the airflow you bought the filter for in the first place.

Use the cleaner made for the filter you own. Petrol, solvents and household degreasers break down the gauze and the adhesive holding the filter together.
