Allow for easy start by initially reducing crank compression, but once the engine starts and rpm increases, the compression release lobe is centrifugally retracted and the engine runs normally, with full compression, and without any loss in performance. Start any engine regardless of displacement or
compression ratio with a stock starter. Designed for Harley Twin Cam engines, these kits offer a significant improvement over the stock timing chain system, ensuring your engine runs smoother, stronger, and more efficiently.
Features & Enhancements:
-
Chain Drive Cams:
-
Cost-Effective: Chain drive systems are generally less expensive to manufacture and purchase. This makes them a more budget-friendly option for riders and builders.
-
Quieter Operation: Chain drives tend to operate more quietly than gear drives, especially at idle and lower RPMs. This is advantageous for riders who prefer a quieter ride.
-
Simpler Installation: Installing a chain drive cam system is often seen as less complex than installing a gear drive system. It requires fewer modifications to the engine, making it a more straightforward choice for upgrades.
-
Flexibility: Chain drive systems allow for a small amount of flex within the drive system. This can be beneficial in absorbing shocks and reducing the risk of damage to the cam or crankshaft under extreme conditions.
-
Self-Adjusting Tensioners: Modern chain drive systems come with self-adjusting tensioners that help maintain proper tension on the chain, reducing maintenance needs and improving the longevity of the system.
Gear Drive Cams:
-
Precision: Gear drive systems offer precise timing between the crank and camshafts, as there is no stretch in the system like there is with a chain. This can lead to better performance and efficiency.
-
Durability and Reliability: Gear drives are known for their durability and can handle higher performance applications better than chain drives. They are less prone to wear and tear over time, making them more reliable for high-performance or heavy-duty use.
-
No Need for Tensioners: Unlike chain drive systems, gear drives do not require tensioners, which can wear out or fail, leading to potential engine damage. This reduces the number of moving parts and potential points of failure.
-
Immediate Response: Gear drive systems provide an immediate transfer of power without the slight delay that can occur with chain stretch in chain drive systems. This can result in a crisper throttle response and slightly improved performance.
-
Maintenance Free: Once installed, gear drive systems require little to no maintenance, as there are no chains to stretch or tensioners to adjust.
-
- Compatibility & Installation: Options available for 00-06 Twin Cam models using stock splined drive gears or stock chain, with special considerations for 99 Twin Cam motors (See Notes). For 06 Dyna and 07-17 Twin Cam models, cams are compatible with hydraulic tensioner chain drive systems. Note that cams 510 and 551 offer bolt-in convenience.
- Comprehensive Kits: Each kit includes cams, inner gears, outer drive gears, bearings, gasket, and detailed instructions for a complete upgrade solution.
- Professional Installation Recommended: Due to the technical nature of the installation, a hydraulic press and professional tools are recommended, along with the use of adjustable pushrod/cover kits for optimal performance.
- Durability & Made in the U.S.A.: Proudly designed and manufactured in the United States, ensuring the highest quality and reliability for your motorcycle.
Important Notes:
- Installation Checks: Installers must check for coil bind, valve-to-valve, and valve-to-piston clearances to ensure safe and optimal operation.
- High-Performance Valve Springs Required: Except for 509 and 510 models, high-performance valve springs are necessary for 99-04 models. Click Here for .650" Lift or Click Here for .585" Lift. On 05-17 Models, High Lift Valve Springs are recommended at .585" Cams, and necessary with any taller cam above .585". Â
- Adjustable Pushrods:Â Recommended for all, and sometimes required on higher lift cams - Click Here
- Valve Train Noise: Due to the characteristics of gear drives, Recommended for all, and sometimes required on higher lift camsan increase in valve train noise may be noticeable when using gear drive cams.
