Which Softail Do You Have?
The Softail name covers three decades and two very different engines, and that is what decides whether a part bolts on.

Evolution Softail, '84-'99. FXST, FLSTC Heritage, FLSTF Fat Boy, FXSTS Springer and the rest of the Evo-era frames.

Twin Cam Softail, '00-'17. The Softail got the Twin Cam in 2000, a year after Touring and Dyna. Within Twin Cam, 2000-2006 uses the early cam chest and 2007-2017 uses the later one, which matters for anything inside the motor.

2018 and up is a different bike. The Milwaukee-Eight Softail replaced both the Softail and the Dyna on a new frame. Those parts live in M8 Softail Parts '18-'26.
Model codes worth knowing, because they are easy to misread: FXDR and FXDRS are M8 Softails despite the FXD letters, FLXRST is the Low Rider ST and FLXRS the Low Rider S, both Softails rather than FXRs, and FLHC and FLSB are Softails rather than Touring bikes.
