Why You Need One

A stock Harley ECM is calibrated for the stock intake and exhaust. Open either one up and the mixture goes lean, which costs you the power you just paid for and runs the motor hotter than it should. A tuner puts the fuel back where it belongs.

Tuners come in two broad types: a piggyback that modifies the signal to the stock ECM, and a replacement ECM that takes over entirely. Auto-tune systems use a wideband oxygen sensor to correct themselves as you ride; others need a map loaded or a dyno session.
