Excess rocker arm to cylinder head end play makes a Harley-Davidson Milwaukee-Eight noisier than it needs to be. These shims close that clearance up. Feuling also notes that M8 cylinder heads see excessive wear on the rocker arm standoff thrusting surfaces, and a hardened shim placed on that surface addresses it.
