Doing a cam chest piecemeal means hoping that four vendors' tolerances agree with each other. Buying the chest as a kit removes that variable, and it is the reason most shops prefer to order it this way. The cam choice is where you decide what the motor becomes, and S&S offers four grinds so the decision is yours rather than the kit's.

Choosing Your Cam Grind

465 Torque Cams suit touring applications where pulling power matters more than peak. 475 kits target up to 100 horsepower as a bolt-in. 540 kits add torque below the midrange. 550 kits push higher in the range. All four run in the same chest hardware, so the rest of the kit does not change with the choice.

Before You Order a Cam Chest Kit

Professional installation is recommended. ⚠️ VERIFY whether your motor is oil-cooled or Twin-Cooled and confirm your cam drive type, since those two choices determine which of the 22 configurations you need. Gear drive applications require pinion shaft runout within specification.
