Three Compartments, Not One

The single most common mistake on a Big Twin. The engine, the primary and the transmission each hold their own fluid, and they are not interchangeable.

Engine oil in a primary that wants a proper chaincase lubricant gives you a clutch that drags or slips. The same mistake in the gearbox shows up as difficult shifting. Three fills, three products, every service.

Filter Care Works Through The Oil

A washable cotton gauze air filter does its job through the oil on the gauze, not the gauze on its own. That is why care kits pair a cleaner with an oil. Wash the dirt out, let it dry completely, then re-oil before it goes back in.

Two things to avoid. Do not re-oil a filter that is still damp, because the oil will not distribute properly. And do not over-oil it, because excess oil can foul a mass airflow sensor on bikes that have one, and it restricts the airflow you bought the filter for in the first place. Use the cleaner made for the filter you own, never petrol or a household degreaser.

Buy The Gasket With The Job

Gaskets and seals are the cheapest parts in any job and the ones that decide whether it stays dry afterwards. Order them at the same time as the parts rather than after the cover is already off.

Exhaust gaskets are a consumable. They crush to seal, so replace them any time the pipes come off. That is also the usual cure for an exhaust leak that turned up right after a service.

The Right Tool Is Cheaper Than The Mistake

A lot of Harley engine work has a purpose-built tool for a reason, and the alternative is improvising against a part that is expensive to replace. Oil pump alignment is the clearest case: get it wrong and the pump does not seal properly, and you find out through low oil pressure rather than at the bench. Steering neck races are the other, where a punch and a hammer damage a frame bore you cannot replace.

Most specialty tools are specified per engine family and sometimes per generation, so check that the listing names your motor.

Worth Fitting Before You Need It

An oil pressure gauge is the cheapest early warning you can add to a Twin Cam. An oil cooler is worth real thought on any air-cooled motor that sits in traffic or gets worked in summer heat.
